Dealing with waste is a concern for everyone in the modern world today, despite people sometimes take the issue of waste disposal for granted. They expect the community that they live in to provide them with a sewer system that removes the waste water from every home. They put their trash out every week so that garbage men can pick it up and take it to a landfill. They know that when they turn on the faucet they will get clean and drinkable water.
The modern conveniences that we have today have not always been in place. The ancient methods of waste disposal were a far cry from the modern world. The ancient Romans created a storm drain system that was used to carry away water. Many Romans would put their waste into the storm drains so that it would be carried away. In the Middle Ages, people started to improve the way they dealt with waste. They created underground privy vaults for their waste. The waste in these vaults would be collected and then sold as fertilizer to farmers. This allowed the farmers to grow more crops than before. It was a time when people realized that dealing with waste in the right way would be beneficial to their society.
The problem with ancient methods of waste disposal is that they depended on the society that was in place to create them. This was not always done very well and it was not until the 19th century that the use of storm drains and sewage systems really began to take hold in the cities around the world. People did realize the importance of dealing with the waste they created. They knew that the waste that surrounded them could cause many diseases such as dysentery that could end up killing a lot of people.
Because they did not always deal with the waste in the right way, the water systems that they used would often become contaminated and this would lead to many health issues for a society. The people who lived in large cities would depend on the water to carry away their waste products without fully considering the impact that had on the society.
People in the modern world are still struggling with the best way to deal with the waste products they generate. The good thing is that modern infrastructure has been created that can handle the problem in a way that keeps people healthy and safe.
