Nominees for the United States Senate from Ohio, Republican J. D. Vance, a venture capitalist, and Democrat Tim Ryan, a United States Representative, debated Monday.

The debate was hosted by Fox News affiliate WJW in Cleveland, Ohio.

Vance and Ryan sought to portray each other as extremists and overly loyal to their respective parties: Vance accused criticized Ryan’s votes “against the border wall funding”; Ryan accused Vance of “running around” with people who deny the results of the 2020 United States presidential election and supporting a 15-week national abortion ban. Vance did not say whether he would support a 15-week national abortion ban, instead declaring himself “pro-life” and supportive of “some minimum national standard”. Ryan called Vice President Kamala Harris “absolutely wrong” to say that the Mexico–United States border was secure and twice stated that President Joe Biden should not run for reelection in 2024.

Meanwhile, Ryan attacked venture capitalists such as Vance for “[making] a whole lot of money off of” manufacturing jobs being moved from the United States to China, to which Vance responded that he could not remember investing in China.

On Ukraine, Vance said that “the needs of our citizens should be put first” while Ryan said that the United States should have a “significant response” were Russia to use nuclear weapons against the European country and, “If JD had his way, Putin would be through Ukraine by this point.” Vance replied that U.S. aid to Ukraine should go to the Mexico–United States border instead, but that Taiwan was “much different”.

Ryan said that Vance would not stand up to former President Donald Trump, while Vance alleged that Ryan would not do so to members of his own party.
